New tool shows why property taxes increased in Cook County

Approximately 81% of Cook County residents experienced an increase in their property taxes, with some areas seeing up to a 15% increase. The northwest suburbs, including Melrose Park, Des Plaines, and Hoffman Estates, were hit the hardest. The Cook County Treasurer's Office has launched a tool that allows residents to see where their tax dollars are going and how much their taxes have increased. The tool also helps residents ensure they receive homeowner and senior freeze exemptions and check for overpayments. The increase in taxes is attributed to factors such as reassessments, loss of COVID adjustments, increased commercial property vacancy, and a new "recapture" state law.
